Evening market get-togethers, sumptuous food, live music, cocktail and wine bar, and boutique beer are all business as usual at the Mt Gravatt Marketta as it kicks off 2018 with a full January schedule. The workshops are based on Jamie Oliver’s recipes and cooking philosophy. The celebrity chef is known for his advocacy of preparing nutritious food to help people stay healthy and lower instances of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Participants will not only learn to cook but will also know more about selecting and shopping for ingredients that will help them save money. They will learn the basics of baking, sautéing, grilling, boiling and roasting. They will also get access to Jamie’s tips and shortcuts in food preparation and planning.

By the end of the classes, participants should be more confident preparing food in the kitchen.

Love Food Hate Waste

The cooking workshop is part of Brisbane City Council’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about waste reduction and minimising food wastage.

The council has lined up various events and activities to educate Brisbane locals who are interested in creating a cleaner and greener community with less landfill.

Progress Continues for Brisbane Metro as New Depot Selected in Rochedale

The Brisbane Metro project moves ahead as Brisbane City Council selected the target site for the metro depot in Rochedale.

The site lies on a 45,000-square-metre lot along School Road in Rochedale. Once built, the depot will be able to accommodate some 60 metro vehicles. Each vehicle can carry a maximum of 150 people.

The council chose the site because it is adjacent to the Eight Mile Plains busway station, where the Metro will start.

Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner gave the public a view of the site chosen to be the new depot for Eight Mile Plains.

The 21-km Brisbane Metro project involves two lines. The Metro 1 line will commence at the Eight Mile Plains station and will link to Brisbane CBD. The line will pass through stations at Upper Mount Gravatt, Griffith University, Holland Park, Greenslopes, Buranda, Woolloongabba and South Bank.

Metro 2 will run from Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to University of Queensland Lakes. The two lines will be interlinked at stations at Roma Street, King George Square, Cultural Centre, South Bank and Mater Hill.

Keeping Cars Off the Road

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk believes that the project will help significantly improve travel times and reduce road congestion. He sees the project as the right solution to the growing need for more efficient public transport services. Ultimately, Brisbane Metro would encourage commuters to use mass transit and keep cars off the road.

The $944-million project also aims to enhance the pedestrian experience at Melbourne Street and Grey Street with a new Cultural Centre station. The council is currently looking to get hold of a 1,600-square-metre site on Grey Street for the underground station.  The Cultural Centre station is envisioned to be a green interchange for the Metro lines and the bus services.

Construction is expected to start in 2019 and should be completed in 2022.

Find out more about the project here.

Business Continues for Toys “R” Us Mt Gravatt Despite Parent Company’s Bankruptcy Filing

Employees and customers of Toys “R” Us Mount Gravatt need not worry after the retailer’s parent company filed for bankruptcy in the United States.

Toys “R” Us Australia assured that it is business as usual at its local stores, including Mount Gravatt and 39 other stores spread across the country.

“The company’s operations outside of the US and Canada, including its operations in Europe and Australia and its approximately 255 licensed stores and joint venture partnership in Asia, which are separate entities, are not part of the Chapter 11 filing,” said a statement from the parent company.

Pressure from Debt

The recent move by Toys “R” Us to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy came as the company gave in to pressure from debt of more than $US5 billion. Under Chapter 11, the company hopes to restructure $US400 million in debt that is due next year.

Some analysts believe that the largest toy retail chain in America is just one of the growing number of retailers that fell victim to the rise of e-commerce. However, some put the blame on its inability to innovate to improve its competitiveness.

Toys “R” Us posted net loss of $US164 million in the quarter ending 29 April. The company has not reported annual profits since 2013.

The Australian stores are doing much better as it reported net sales of $US207 million in the year ending January 2017.

The bankruptcy filing will also not deter the plan of Toys “R” Us Australia to open four new stores in the country by Christmas 2017. One of the new stores will be in the greater Brisbane area in North Lakes.

Mount Gravatt East Student Launches Passion Project

A Year 6 student at the Belmont State School and a resident of Mount Gravatt East, Kein Sheldrake is a computer whiz who was inspired by the needs of his best friend into launching his passion project. Kein builds computers for other kids, families or groups in the community who do not have one or cannot afford to buy one.

It all started when Kein told his mother, Michelle Sheldrake, that his best friend didn’t have a computer. “He is naturally very helpful. There has always been a natural inclination to look out for other people, but I was still surprised,” his mum said in a recent media interview.

Kein took it upon himself to learn how to build computers from watching YouTube video tutorials so that he could build the units himself and donate them to people in the community. His efforts have attracted attention and support both online and offline. Steve Minnikin, MP for Chatsworth and Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Multicultural Affairs has made a donation for Kein’s project.

Calling upon people to support Kein’s project, MP Minnikin lauded Kein’s efforts and posted an appeal on his Facebook page. He said, “If you have PCs or PC accessories such as monitors, mouse or keyboards that you no longer need, you can contact Kein and his mum, Michelle at fastertech06@gmail.com.”

Kein’s passion project drew messages of support and admiration.

“I think letting children work on a project they feel passionate about can really free up their imagination and creativity. What a wonderful project this boy has come up with. Let’s support him by donating computer parts that we don’t need anymore.” – Breeze Lifecoaching

“…what a great initiative by a lovely young man!” — Stacey Benjamin

To say that ten-year-old Kein Sheldrake is good with his hands would be an understatement. With his project, Kein is proving that he not only has good hands. He is smart, resourceful, and has an immensely good heart too.

As a young man with dreams of working in the IT industry one day, Kein certainly seems to be on the right track. Build on, young man!
