This cosy corner cafe, tucked away on a quiet street, beat out hundreds of worthy contenders across Queensland to claim this prestigious honour.

The story of this cafe is as unique as the couple behind it. This cosy corner cafe is owned by Louise and Josh Daly, university sweethearts turned husband and wife who share a deep passion for food and coffee.

Louise earned her degree in food science and introduced Josh to all kinds of gastronomic adventures over the years, from frog legs to black fungus. This bred an appreciation that led the couple to eventually leave science behind to pursue the hospitality industry.

The cafe’s name has an especially heartwarming origin story. Louise had been toying with the idea of starting a macaron stall when she found inspiration one day simply admiring their precious rescue pug pup Bowie. It was obvious he was destined to be the muse for their family venture – thus, “Little Black Pug” was born long before the cafe itself!

Now Little Black Pug has earned quite a following in Mount Gravatt for its scrumptious and diverse menu with options to satisfy gluten-free, vegan and all other dietary needs and preferences.

From the gluten-free donuts to the big vegan breakfast, it’s no wonder they took home this year’s Toby’s Estate Local Legends Award!

More than the seasonal menu that keeps people lining up every weekend, it’s the sense of extended family. Having watched many relationships blossom from first dates to marriage, Louise and Joshua have an almost parental pride. They have seen countless babies go from strollers, to toddling around, to full blown dancing on tables.

The menu caters to different diets with many gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan friendly options. It focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients and caters to a variety of tastes and diets. For dogs, treats include grain-free beef and veggie meatballs, Peking duck wings, and chicken necks.

There are two dog-friendly dining areas – the Garden, accessible from the Berge St entrance, and the Front, accessible from Logan Rd. Your dog can even enjoy his own warm “puppyccino” made with frothy lactose-free milk.

For their human companions, menu options range from classic breakfast fare like croissants and eggs on toast to gourmet lunch and dinner choices. Burgers like the ‘Nicolas Cajun’ with housemade Cajun charcoal grilled chicken, fresh tomato, lettuce, and spicy aioli put a creative spin on cafe’s grub.

‘Mr Benedict Wafflebatch’ is an inventive take on eggs benedict, with a housemade savoury cheese waffle base topped with popcorn chicken, poached eggs, and hollandaise.

The Newest Pooch-Friendly Cafe In Mt Gravatt: Little Black Pug Cafe

Cuddle cute pugs and bring your own pups to the Little Black Pug Cafe in Mt Gravatt. This cafe is inspired by what else? Pugs!

From Lab Coats to Aprons

Owned by married couple Louise and Josh Daly who are pug lovers, the cafe was named after their adorable black pugs, Bowie and Mate. The cafe had their grand opening on 5 May in conjunction with the Pugs SOS charity.

They’re not only about bringing the local community with the same interests, but Louise also has a passion for hospitality and good food.

What’s really interesting is the Dalys are into the sciences before they ventured into the food industry. Louise was in cytogenetics whilst Josh was a microbiologist.

Louise has always loved cooking and her original plan was to launch pastries such as macarons, however, she realised that a commercial kitchen would cost them a lot hence they settled in for a street cafe instead after convincing her husband to join her.

The couple decided to establish a dog-friendly cafe, which has an industrial touch in shades of black, white, wood and a touch of greenery and steel. As would be expected, the cafe is also adorned with pug decorations as well.

Human Food

Their menu, aside from being amazing and extensive, are also dog-friendly allowing dog owners to feed their pooches whilst they eat as well.

Don’t miss out on their Nacho Imposter, crispy corn fritters, tomato relish, guacamole and sour cream.

You can also try out their Woofles which is cheese waffles with smoked ham or salmon, herbed cream cheese and 63-degree eggs.

They also offer smoothies and smoothie bowls.

Delicious sweet treats are also available along with Toby’s Estate coffee.
